Art, Precision, and People - The Making of Proper
Georgia Herbert’s path to barbering didn’t start with clippers in hand. It began in music studios, immersed in rhythm, performance, and the discipline of sound. Later, her curiosity for how things worked led her to study mechanics - an unexpected but vital chapter that sharpened her problem-solving skills and love for precision.
Somewhere between melody and machinery, Georgia discovered that she was searching for a craft that combined artistry, technical skill, and genuine human connection. Barbering offered all three: creativity expressed through shape and texture, the satisfaction of a finely tuned trade, and the sociability of working closely with people.
That blend of art and engineering shaped the vision for Proper.
What started as a single chair in a converted garden shed grew from a clear idea: a haircut is never “just” a haircut. It’s a conversation, a piece of design, and a small act of confidence-building. Georgia brought together her years of technical learning, her love of aesthetics, and her belief in inclusivity, building a space where everyone - all hair types, all backgrounds - feels welcome and leaves looking their best.
Today, Proper is more than a barbershop. It’s an inclusive studio on a serene Buckinghamshire farm, a place where the pace slows and craftsmanship takes centre stage. Alongside the studio, Georgia launched The British School of Barbering, teaching students worldwide the value of refined, sustainable technique. And with Proper ProWear, she’s re-imagining the workwear barbers and groomers rely on, designing garments that protect, perform, and look as polished as the craft itself.
Across every venture runs the same thread: thoughtful design, technical excellence, and a respect for the people behind the chair. Georgia’s story - from music and mechanics to educator, founder, and innovator - shows how creativity, skill, and purpose can shape an enduring standard.
Proper isn’t just a name. It’s a promise: of work done well, service delivered with respect, and style that feels effortless because it’s been crafted with care.
